On a recent trip I realised there is a lot of things I do to reduce waste and environmental impact while travelling. I thought to myself that if everyone was to make at least some of these simple changes, we could make a big impact. Therefore I would like to share these with you here. Please let me know if these tips were helpful, I'd love to know your thoughts!
Tip 1. Check with your accommodation if they offer refillable shampoo and shower gel.
This is a great way to save time, money and waste. Before you travel contact your accommodation and ask if they offer refillable shampoo dispensers, many hotels and B&B's are now offering this. If they don't you can always kindly recommend they give it a try in the future. If not grab your shampoo bar, pop it in a storage tin and your ready to go.
Tip 2. Carry your reusable bottle everywhere (yes even through airport security!)
We all know the devastating effects single use plastic bottles have on the environment but what many of us don't know is that you can reduce this massively while travelling. I always ensure I have filled my bottle up before heading to the airport, then try to drink it all by the time I reach airport security. If there is still liquid in the bottle please make sure you empty this out before heading through the gates. Once I've reached the airport lounge the first thing I do is refill my bottle, luckily many airports now have a refill station but if not just ask any cafe, coffee shop or restaurant if they can refill with tap water. They are always more than happy to do so, plus you've just saved £3-£4 on a bottle of water!
Tip 3. Shop Local
Once you arrive in your destination it is important to shop local, try to purchase handcrafted souvenirs and eat at independent restaurants instead of large corporations or chains.
Lastly enjoy your trip! If you have any tips or tricks you'd like to share i'd love to know, leave a comment below.
